Xbox Privacy for Kids

A Global Educational Video Helping Families Understand Online Safety

Xbox partnered with Watts to create an engaging, easy‑to‑understand educational video that teaches children ages 6–12 - with a focus on 8–10‑year‑olds - the fundamentals of privacy on Xbox. The challenge: simplify complex data concepts for kids while still giving parents the clarity and confidence they need to manage their family’s digital safety.

This project expands our long‑standing collaboration with Xbox and reinforces our expertise in animation, youth education, and global content localization.

The Challenge

Privacy is a critical topic for families, but it’s often presented in ways that are too technical, too abstract, or too intimidating - especially for younger audiences. Xbox needed a video that could:

  • Explain what Xbox is and who owns it

  • Clarify what data is collected

  • Show how that data is used

  • Identify who data is shared with

  • Demonstrate how to modify settings and manage data

All in a format that children could easily understand, and parents could trust.

The video would anchor a new Xbox Privacy landing page on Xbox.com, complementing written content and linking to additional resources. It also needed to support 25 localized versions for global markets, with English voiceover and region‑specific captioning.

Our Approach

Watts created a 50–90 second animated explainer designed specifically for young viewers - bright, friendly, and simple without ever feeling childish. The tone balances clarity with reassurance, helping kids understand privacy while empowering parents to take action.

Key Creative Decisions Included:

Kid‑Friendly Visual Language

We developed a playful, Xbox‑branded animation style that feels modern and accessible. Characters, environments, and UI elements were designed to mirror the Xbox ecosystem while remaining universally relatable.

Simplifying Complex Concepts

Each of the five required “lifts” was transformed into a clear, digestible moment in the story. Instead of technical jargon, we used metaphors, visual cues, and character‑driven scenarios to show how data flows and how settings work.

Built for a Global Audience

The video was engineered for 25 localized versions, with:

  • English voiceover

  • Localized captions

  • Region‑appropriate text updates

  • Visual pacing that accommodates translation length differences

This ensured the message remained consistent and culturally accessible across US, UK, and EU markets.

A Tone of Safety and Empowerment

The narrative emphasizes that Xbox is designed with safety in mind—and that kids and parents have tools to control their experience. The goal wasn’t fear, but confidence.

The Solution

The final video walks kids through the Xbox world using a friendly narrator and simple, engaging visuals. It covers:

  • What Xbox is and who’s behind it

  • What information is collected and why

  • How Xbox uses data to improve gameplay and safety

  • Who data is shared with (and who it’s not shared with)

  • How families can adjust privacy settings together

The result is a clear, reassuring guide that demystifies privacy and encourages healthy conversations between kids and parents.

Results

The video became the centerpiece of Xbox’s new Privacy for Kids landing page, helping families worldwide understand how Xbox protects their data. Its approachable tone and global adaptability made it a valuable tool for both internal education and external communication.

This project demonstrates Watts’ ability to translate complex, sensitive topics into engaging stories that resonate with diverse audiences—especially when clarity and trust are essential.
